NAVY @ Temple Game Notes
Nov. 27, 2021
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
Both offenses exchanged three-and-outs on their first two possessions of the ball game.
A great kickoff return from senior slotback Chance Warren, set up the Midshipmen offense at the Temple 27-yard line on their third drive of the game. Just five plays later, senior slotback Carlinos Acie found the end zone on an 11-yard option run to give Navy the lead.
The drive went 27 yards on five plays, lasting 2:22.
NAVY 7, Temple 0.
Following another three-and-out from Temple, sophomore quarterback Tai Lavatai and the triple-option offense fully utilized both the ground attack and the game clock, burning through both on their fourth drive of the game. Sophomore quarterback Xavier Arline came in to replace an injured Lavatai and threw a 15-yard passing touchdown to a wide-open Warren to double Navy’s lead versus Temple.
The drive went 71 yards on 13 plays, lasting 6:40.
NAVY 14, Temple 0.
Following another failed Temple offensive drive, Lavatai returned to the field but had an option pitch batted away by Temple redshirt sophomore defensive end Leyton Jordan, which led to a recovered fumble for the Owls at the Navy one-yard line. One play later, redshirt junior running back Ra'Von Bonner crossed the goal line to get Temple on the scoreboard and cut Navy’s lead in half.
The drive went one yard on one play, lasting four seconds.
NAVY 14, Temple 7.
With two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half, Navy went three-and-out on a drive where Lavatai went 0-for-2 throwing the football. But a fumble on the ensuing punt return by redshirt sophomore Amad Anderson Jr. was recovered by Navy inside the Temple 10 at their seven-yard line. After fumbles on two consecutive plays, both recovered by Navy, the drive stalled and ended with a 32-yard field goal from junior kicker Bijan Nichols.
The drive went -8 yards on four plays, lasting 1:23.
NAVY 17, Temple 7.
With 12:05 still to play in the third, Navy dominated running the football and ended their first drive of the second half with a three-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Isaac Ruoss.
The drive went 58 yards on 11 plays, lasting 5:22.
NAVY 24, Temple 7.
Temple’s offense quickly responded with their first strong drive of the game, matching Navy’s offensive efficiency. Graduate running back Teyvon Ruley only needed to run the football four yards to the end zone to get on the board, as the Owls cut Navy’s lead down to ten.
The drive went 80 yards on 14 plays, lasting 5:51.
NAVY 24, Temple 14.
Undeterred by the Temple score, Navy began moving the football through Temple’s defense yet again. Sophomore wide receiver Jayden Umbarger’s key 17-yard run to the Temple 24-yard line was quickly followed up by a six-yard run by Ruoss for a touchdown.
The drive went 75 yards on 12 plays, lasting 6:43.
NAVY 31, Temple 14.
Temple’s next drive led to a Ruley fumble that was recovered by Navy senior cornerback Jamal Glenn. With 4:09 left to go in the game, Navy looked like they may stall on their drive due to a huge loss of yards on second down, but a 24-yard pass from Lavatai to Warren on third and long salvaged the drive and led to an eventual four-yard touchdown pass to Warren.
The drive went 57 yards on 12 plays, lasting 5:53.
NAVY 38, Temple 14.
Temple attempted to run down the clock, but fumbled to Navy to end the game.
