Navy @ Memphis Game Notes

October 14th, 2021

Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, TN

Memphis won the toss and elected to receive. Freshman quarterback Seth Henigan hit redshirt sophomore wide receiver Javan Ivory for a 50-yard reception on the first play of the game. After redshirt freshman runningback Brandon Thomas got the Tigers inside the 10, Sean Dykes snagged a 3-yard touchdown pass from Henigan to give the Tigers the early lead. 12:10

The drive went 75 yards on 7 plays, 2:50

Memphis 7, Navy 0

Navy took possession after the touchdown by Memphis, then held it the rest of the 1st quarter. Sophomore quarterback Tai Lavatai helmed the offensive and moved steadily down the field, converted on a 4th and 1, and the drive ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by senior fullback James Harris.

Lavatai was injured at the end of the drive and back-up sophomore quarterback Xavier Arline entered the game for one play.

The drive went 75 yards on 21 plays, 12:10

According to the ESPN broadcasting team, it was the longest drive in FBS football so far in the 2021 season, and Navy’s longest offensive drive in 15 seasons.

Navy 7, Memphis 7

Memphis responded on the very next play from scrimmage with a reverse play to senior wide receiver Calvin Austin, III that went for a 65-yard touchdown run.

The drive went 65 yards on 1 play, 0:14

Memphis 14, Navy 7

Each of the game’s first three possessions ended in touchdowns.

Memphis seemed to have figured out the triple option by Navy’s second possession of the game and forced the Midshipmen to punt 12:26

On their next possession, the Navy defense began to click. Diego Fagot picked off a pass from Memphis quarterback Henigan and ran it back into the endzone. But the touchdown was called back due to a "participating without a helmet" penalty against Navy.

Despite the penalty, Navy took over with great field position. Lavatai threw a complete pass to senior wide receiver Mychal Cooper in the endzone, but that touchdown was called back due to another personal foul penalty.

Kicker Bijan Nichols hit a 36-yard field goal. 8:17

The drive went 6 yards on 5 plays, 2:37

Memphis 14, Navy 10

The Memphis Tigers put another TD on the board with another big play. This was a 74-yard pass touchdown from Henigan to junior wide receiver Eddie Lewis.

The drive went 86 yards on 3 plays, 0:47

Memphis 21, Navy 10

Another penalty cost Navy another big play as Chance Warren’s 25-yard run on 1st and 10 was brought back. Then Lavatai was sacked and Navy was forced to punt. 5:01

The Navy defense adjusted and began to guard against the big play. Memphis answered with long, run-based drive that took over four minutes. The drive ended in another Memphis touchdown on a four-yard run by Thomas. 0:40

The drive went 63 yards on 12 plays, 4:21

Memphis 28, Navy 10

Navy opened the 2nd half with a trademark, clock-eating drive and pushed into Memphis territory. Then the Navy offense pulled a big play of their own on a pass-action pass play from Lavatai to Cooper for a 28-yard touchdown.

The drive went 75 yards on 14 plays, 6:51

Memphis 28, Navy 17

Memphis got right back to work on their ensuing possession, hitting another big play with a 52-yard pass play from Henigan to wide receiver redshirt freshman Koby Drake to get to the Navy 17. That lead to a 4-yard rushing touchdown by senior runningback Marquavius Weaver.

The drive went 72 yards on 5 plays, 1:56

Memphis 35, Navy 17

Late in the 3rd quarter the Navy defense forced Memphis to take its first punt of the game 1:59

Navy was set to punt to open the 4th quarter, but faked the punt and senior slot back Chance Warren completed a pass to senior fullback Isaac Ruoss to convert, with the help of a roughing the passer penalty against Memphis.

Lavatai was injured on the next play while being tackled in the backfield and left the game, Xavier Arline took over.

After a sack of Arline, then a botched end-around, Navy went for -17 yards on the drive before Nichols missed a field goal from 55 yards out. 8:28

After an exchange of punts, the Memphis offense began a methodical process of running down the clock. Navy used its timeouts and eventually time ran out.
