ARMY @ Liberty Game Notes

November 27, 2021

Williams Stadium, Lynchburg, VA

12:00 pm

Liberty quarterback Malik Willis play-faked on the opening play and dashed for 19 yards. Unable to earn another first down, the Flames went for a 4th-and-10, but Willis’s pass was incomplete and Army took over on their own 49 yard line.

Army's sophomore running back Tyrell Robinson burst through the line on their first play for 17 yards. Short yardage rushes got Army into the redzone and but senior quarterback Christian Anderson was sacked on 3rd-and-goal and Army settled for a Cole Talley field goal to get on the board.

The drive went 42 yards on 11 plays, 5:47

Army 3, Liberty 0

The second 4th down conversion attempt for Liberty near midfield resulted in a false start penalty and Liberty sent in the punt team. Attempting to fake the punt for a first down, the punter, Max Morgan, passed to Eddie Ogle. The pass was intercepted by sophomore cornerback Bo Nicolas-Paul to give Army possession at the Liberty 45.

Junior running back Brahem Murphy then snagged a pass down the middle from Anderson and ran it into the endzone for a 34-yard touchdown.

The drive went 55 yards on 5 plays, 2:47

Army 10, Liberty 0

Army’s defense kept consistent pressure on Willis. Liberty tried to go for it again on 4th and 7. Willis scrambled, but instead of throwing it away, he tried to find a receiver. That backfired as he was sacked by senior linebacker Arik Smith for a 16-yard loss and Army took over at the Liberty 44.

Junior quarterback Tyhier Tyler took a fullback follow up the middle for a 9-yard first down to the 19 yard line, then Jakobi Buchanan went through the middle and all the way into the endzone to give Army a 3-score lead.

The drive went 44 yards on 5 plays, 2:33

Army 17, Liberty 0

Liberty drove to near midfield after the ensuing kickoff, but their third 4th down conversion attempt resulted in another incomplete pass and Army again took over on downs at their own 45.

Anderson hit Robinson for a 51-yard pass and he was brought down at the 3. Buchannan ran it in from the 1 two plays later for his second touchdown of the game.

The drive went 55 yards on 4 plays, 1:51

Army 24, Liberty 0

Liberty finally made some progress on offense, with quick passes for first downs to get to the redzone for the first time in the game. The Army pass rush continued to force pressure on Willis, but Liberty’s quarterback always seemed to somehow avoid being sacked.

Liberty finally got on the scoreboard with a 36-yard field goal.

The drive went 38 yards on 9 plays, 3:21

Army 24, Liberty 3

Army started on their own 25 after a touch-back, their first drive to start behind their own 45. Army attempted to run out the clock on the first half, but Liberty used their time outs and prevented the offense from gaining yardage. After Anderson was sacked, Army punted for the first time.

Liberty started at their own 15 after a beautiful punt from Zach Harding. Stuck at their own 7, Liberty finally decided to punt on 4th down.

Army opened the second half with a classic Army offensive drive. Buchannan led the way with rushing gains and earned his 3rd touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run. Tyler rushed for 20 yards, senior Cade Barnard gained 24 yards and sophomore Tyson Riley added 4 yards on that drive.

The drive went 75 yards on 14 plays, 8:15

Army 31, Liberty 3

Moving with tempo down the field, Liberty benefited from a pass interference play against Anthony Adkins to get a 1st-and-10 at the Army 14. The drive ended with a touchdown pass to Noah Frith.

The drive went 73 yards on 7 plays, 2:04

Army 31, Liberty 10

Army punted after their first 3-and-out of the game and Liberty continued to gain big yards on passing plays, including a 41-yarder to get across mid-filed. The Flames were slowed only on an incomplete 32-yard attempt to hit Joshua Mack in the endzone.

After Brody Brumm snagged a catch from Willis at the Army 6 for 1st and goal, Nolan Cockrill caused an apparent fumble. It was recovered by Army and returned by to the Army 37, but replay overturned the call and ruled that the Liberty ball carrier, Mack, was down at the seven yard line before the ball came loose.

Malik Willis took it in himself from the 7 for another Liberty touchdown, and what was a blowout was now a game.

The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The drive went 85 yards on 8 plays

Army 31, Liberty 16

Army’s first 4th down conversion attempt, on their own 44, was successful as Riley gained three yards to move the sticks. Army couldn’t maintain the drive, but the punt by Zach Harding buried Liberty at the own 1 yard line with less than 10 minutes in the game.

Facing 3rd and short, Willis completed a 24 yard pass to Kevin Shaa to get to midfield.

Another great pass play from Willis, while scrambling, put Liberty at the Army 25.

A dropped pass to a wide open Johnny Huntley led to 4th and 10, and then to Liberty’s fifth failed 4th down conversion.

Army took over with just under 5 and a half minutes in the game on their own 25. Army needed to just keep the clock running, and helped themselves with another clutch rush by Buchannan to get a first down at the Army 37. Unable to keep it moving, Army punted and Zach Harding hit another perfect punt to put Liberty on their own 9 yard line.

Willis hit a 17-yard completion and another 9-yard pass to get the Flames to the 42 yard line. Then Willis’s 58-yard completion to Demario Douglas, which would have placed the Flames at the Army 11, was called back on a holding penalty.

On the next play Willis was intercepted by Jabari Moore at the 50 and the game was decided.
