Army @ Air Force Game Notes

11:30 a.m.

Globe Life Field, Arlington, TX

After a pair of three-and-outs from Air Force, Army’s offense broke open the pass attack on their second drive of the game. A 48-yard connection from senior quarterback Christian Anderson to sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Alston set up the Black Knights at the Falcons’ 26-yard line. That set up junior kicker Cole Talley for the first field goal of the day. But, unfortunately for Army, the field goal was no good and the game remained scoreless.

Air Force began the 2nd quarter with the football at their own 21-yard line and still had no answers for the Army defense. The Black Knights’ offense, led by powerful runs by junior running back Jakobi Buchanan, were able to drive down the field to the Air Force 47 before punting.

The Falcons offense finally showed signs of life for the first time in the game, running back-to-back 10-yard gains on the ground by junior quarterback Haaziq Daniels and junior wide receiver DeAndre Hughes. Following a five-yard run from junior fullback Omar Fattah, the Falcons found their way into Army territory for the first time in the afternoon.

Burning the clock, Air Force’s newfound momentum carried them all the way to the Army 27-yard line before they were stopped on 4th and 1 by the Black Knights’ defense. With 1:27 left in the first half, Army’s offense took possession of the football but failed to score before the half ended.

After 30 minutes of play, Army had 119 of total offense while Air Force had only 88.

The Black Knights wasted no time getting started offensively to begin the second half, as junior quarterback Tyhier Tyler found sophomore wide receiver Tyrell Robinson for 39 yards through the air to set up Army at the 31-yard line of Air Force. Just four plays later, Tyler found the end zone on a nine-yard scamper to give the Black Knights the touchdown and break the game’s scoreless streak.

The drive went 64 yards on seven plays, lasting 3:48

Down but not out, Daniels fired a deep bomb of his own to senior wide receiver Brandon Lewis for 36 yards to set up the Falcons at the Army 22-yard line. Unable to find the end zone, Air Force settled for a 39-yard field goal by freshman kicker Matthew Dapore.

The drive went 49 yards on nine plays, lasting 4:54.

Just two plays after Dapore’s field goal, Army lit up the sky, as Anderson found Robinson on a 79-yard grab-and-go touchdown.

The drive went 79 yards in just two plays, lasting 0:55.

Another connection from Daniels to Lewis for 23 yards was immediately followed by an interception by sophomore Dane Kinamon off an attempted Air Force flea flicker. Army junior cornerback Cameron Jones picked off the football and ran it back to the Air Force 36-yard line. Due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Army, the Black Knights began their next drive at their own 46-yard line.

A crucial fourth-down stop by Air Force set up its offense at their own 34-yard line with 13:32 left to go in the game. Daniels and the Falcons got their drive started quickly following a 31-yard pass from the junior quarterback to junior wide receiver David Cormier. This set up the Falcons inside the Army 30-yard line.

Daniels would cap the drive off with a 4-yard pass to Kinamon for a much-needed Air Force touchdown. On the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, Hughes dove into the endzone to shrink the Black Knights’ lead to just three points with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter.

The drive went 66 yards on seven plays, lasting 3:09.

Following a failed drive by Army, Daniels’ arm stayed hot when he found Kinamon down the middle of the field for a 22-yard completion that brought the Falcons to their own 36-yard line. Facing 3rd and 15, a 14-yard completion to Cormier set up 4th and 1 for Air Force, but it was fumbled by Daniels leading to a turnover on downs for Army with 6:48 left in the game.

A punt from Army led to Air Force starting their next drive deep in their own territory at their 9-yard line. Daniels continued to smoke the Black Knights through the air finding Kinamon on completions of 17 and 23 yards. With the clock running, the Falcons drove to the Army 39-yard line before facing a critical fourth-down conversion.

Daniels burst forward for a crucial 13-yard run on fourth down to get the Falcons a huge first down at the Army 26-yard line. With half a minute left and running on the clock, junior running back Brad Roberts carried the ball to the Black Knights’ 13-yard line to set up Dapore for a successful 30-yard field goal to tie the game.

The drive went 78 yards on 15 plays, lasting 4:40.

Throwing the football to close the fourth quarter, Army couldn’t score and the game headed into overtime in Arlington.

Army began overtime with the football first.

On 3rd and 8, a critical throw from Anderson to sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Alston carried Army to the Falcons’ 11-yard line before Anderson fumbled the football as he crossed the goal line. Sophomore offensive lineman Jordyn Law fell on the football in the endzone for the touchdown. After review, the call was confirmed and the extra point was good.

With a touchdown required to move the game into 2OT, a critical sack on Daniels from junior outside linebacker Andre Carter II looked to doom the Falcons, but on the following play, Daniels kept the passing game alive and found Lewis on a 19-yard completion for a key first down for Air Force.

After three plays that resulted in only four yards, Air Force faced 4th and 6 on the Army six-yard line. On fourth down Daniels threw to Kinamon in the endzone, but the pass was incomplete and Army's win was sealed.
